When Murphy Comes Knocking PDF Print E-mail
Written by Stephen Dantzig

Marshall and I arrived at a beautiful East Oahu beach called “Baby Maks” or “Little Makapuu” at 10:15 in the morning to meet our even more beautiful model. You may remember Flora from an earlier article. She’s great fun to work with and the photographs of her are stunning…and she fired Marshall once this time! I know what you are thinking: a 10:15 arrival time for a beach shoot? By now you know that I am not going to sit back and take what nature gives me—which at this time of day would be increasingly harsh light and nasty shadows. No, my truck was loaded with a Dynalite UNI400 mono-strobe and power pack and radio slaves and transmitter. I brought a scrim to soften the sunlight and a beauty dish to attach to the strobe to add a somewhat harsh light to mimic the sun, but in a much more controlled manner. Murphy showed up early and took my slaves with him…which could have been disaster. I am, however, a huge believer in back-ups, so I went with a PC cord when the slaves refused to work. The majority of the morning went as planned with the light firing and helping to create beautiful images of a very pretty girl.
