Rob, just curious, how do you go about setting White Balance, especially in situations with mixed lighting (e.g. flash + ambient)? Custom WB? Post?

Thanks,

PD

I'm afraid that I'm an AUTO everything guy. I want to be focused on the action and expressions in front of me and don't want to be worrying about the camera settings. The odd times that the Auto settings miss - but I can accept that and just try to make any adjustments after in post processing.

The fact is that a custom WB setting is not going to make any difference with a shot that includes both florescent and flash or warm ambient and flash or any mixed lighting condition - - - the only thing that will resolve that is filtering the different light sources and controlling the light falling on the subject or background. I don't have time for that at weddings. The other problem that I would have by using custom or preset WB settings, would be forgetting to change them back when the light source changes and ending up with more ruined shots than any misses I may get with Auto WB.

My standard working procedure for digital capture is - JPEG - AF - Auto WB - Program AE - Auto ISO. So far - so good - - - but then I'm not one to sweat all of the details. I just want good images that are pleasing to the eye and emotions.

Hi Rob,

Thanks so much for sharing the info. I shot two church events recently (non-wedding and much less stressful) but had a tough time with the mixed lighting. I try not to get to hung up on the technical stuff so I can concentrate on capturing moments. However, the post processing was a bit painful. I had tungsten light on stage and used bounced flash to supplement light so it was not quite balanced to either. After much tweaking I found something I could live with and fortunately that was applicable to most of the images.
