Hi I just joined and I hope you don't mind me asking this question. It just came up this week and I want to make sure I know my rights.

Long story - but the question that arose is - who do the pictures I take belong to?

My answer is me! Unless I sign a contract with someone and give them full rights to the shots - whatever I shoot belongs to me - right?
I'm in Canada - but I think that applies here too...

Hi D,

I am not so sure about that. I *think* I remember reading on a different forum that the copyright laws were different in Canada. Can anyone with specifics about Canada law help out here?

Copyright law in Canada is similar to that in the United States but there are some important differences with respect to aspects such as the consequences of failing to register and work for hire. I suggest you read this <a href="http://strategis.gc.ca/sc_mrksv/cipo/cp/cp_circ_11-e.html">circular<a/> issued by the Canadian Intellectual Property Office.

Just be glad you don't live in South Africa. Copyright of all commissioned work belongs to the client unless you state otherwise in a contract beforehand.
