We moved to Wyoming in March from Colorado. My business was just starting to pick up in Colorado so now I am starting all over again

I really enjoy shooting Seniors and was wondering if anyone had some good advice for getting started in our new community? I have put an ad in the local paper and I shot a couple of teenage girls for models so I have them getting the word out.

We live in a really small community so word of mouth should be the best if I can figure out how to start the fire

Thanks for any input.

Hi Sherry,

Just thought I'd pop in this forum for a minute to see if I could help out.

I've got a couple of ideas that you should be able to work on without spending a whole lot of money:

1. You know those signs you see on community bulletin boards with the cut tabs and phone numbers? They usually advertise day care or other such service but there's no reason why they can't advertise your photography. Just be sure that the sign itself is nicely printed (from your desktop printer, of course) with a great sample picture (if you want to show more than one image use odd numbers: 1, 3, 5 images, etc.)

Print up a bunch and carry some in your car. Put them on every community bulletin board in every drug store, grocery store, church, etc., that you can find. Be sure to keep track of where you put them so you can go back and see if they need replacing. You'll also be able to identify areas of town that show more interest than others by how often you have to replace the notices.

2. Pass out business cards like candy. Leave them behind on deli counters, in movie theaters, wherever you can tactfully place them. Put them in kid's halloween bags, wrapped around a decent sized candy bar ('cause you don't want to look like a piker) and hope they have older siblings.

3. Get hooked up with a local women's group and give a luncheon talk about how they can improve their own personal photos. They'll think of you when it's time to do the good stuff because they'll realize it's out of their league.

4. Read any Guerilla Marketing book by Jay Conrad Levinson for more low cost self promo ideas.

Hope that helps.
