Aloha from Honolulu! I hope the summer is treating you well. My summer has been quite enjoyable thus far. I am taking a little break from the “day job” and working part time. I decided not to travel this year and instead convinced my mom to visit Oahu. We spent a very enjoyable two weeks touring my home island. I forget to play tourist during the routine work weeks, so it was a great change of pace. I also took a one day vacation with my diving buddy [remember the “Sharpen Your Axe” story from a couple of months ago?] to the North Shore of Oahu last weekend. The day consisted of my first beach dive—the underwater rocks, coves, caves and coral were awesome!—amazing above water view, great food, several adult beverages and a day among dear friends. It doesn’t get much better than last Sunday. But, alas, this summer has been the start of a new book project for me [seems to be a trend here at PPR!] My new project will be a return to the basics of lighting and I’m trying to limit the mathematics! I am also really trying to stick with fairly simple lighting set-ups (which is harder than you might think for a lighting geek like me!) One very pleasant side benefit that has come from this project has been my rediscovery of reflectors. Now, I never really forgot about them, but they were relegated to some routine uses in many of my sets. I had the opportunity to play with some complicated set-ups for my Softbox book and now it was time to play around with some big silver cards! Each image that follows was created with one or two strobes [one in a 30”X40” softbox and the other as a spotlight with I believe a 20 degree grid]…and reflectors!
