| Studied Electrical Engineering, English and Art History at the University of Texas at Austin. Began teaching in the college of fine arts at UT in 1981. Left the University in 1984 to become the director and creative director of a regional advertising agency in Austin, Texas. The agency was Avanti Advertising and Design. We did retail advertising for the first "category killer" book store, Bookstop, Inc. Their 124 stores were purchased by Barnes and Noble in 1987 and I took advantage of the sale and transition to leave the advertising agency and begin a career as a freelance photographer. Over the past twenty years my concentration has been on corporate advertising photography and I shoot executive portraits, events and general people oriented advertising shots for a wide range of companies, including: Dell Inc., IBM, Motorola, Time Warner, Freescale Semiconductor, AMD, Ziff Davis, USAA Insurance, Abbott Labs, and many others. In the early 1990's I was a product beta tester for Agfa films and I lectured around the country about their products. I've recently written a book on Location Lighting which will be published at the end of 2007 or the beginning of 2008. I also write about lighting and cameras for Studio Photography Magazine. I shoot with a bizarre assemblage of digital and film cameras that include: Kodak DCS 760 and SLR/n, Nikon D2h, D2x, D200, D80, Olympus E-1, Two wonderful Sony R-1's, A Fuji S5 pro, A Pentax 645 system, a Mamiya Pro TL 645 system and a fairly complete Rollei SLR system. I'm schizophrenic about lights and vacillate between using multiple nikon SB-800's in the iTTL mode, a box full of Profoto's vastly unde rappreciated ProTungsten lights, a weird blend of florescent fixtures, Pelican cases full of Profoto Studio flashes and old canvas bags of Alien Bees monolights. I've won over a dozen gold ADDY awards for categories ranging from: Television, Radio, Print and Photography. I swim with a masters team and try to log a couple miles a day. I have two ancient cats (we're talking 20+ years). One is in good shape, the other is adorable but deaf and blind and requires ample quality time. My latest goals are to finish a second book on photography by the end of the year, shoot more black and white film before it's all gone, and to take a road trip just for the hell of it. I've been happily married for 22 years and I have an 11.5 year old son. That's about it. |
