StanSC:
I'm interested in purchasing (2) studio lights for lighting large bridal parties in churches and large reception halls. So operating on AC power is a preference. But I see uses for outdoor work and would like to also be able to power then by a batter pack on outdoor photo sessions.

Has anyone used the Alien Bees for this type of purpose and what opinion do you have of the equipment? Also, has anyone used their portable power packs? I am somewhat concerned about the need for these units to use a grounding rod!

Lastly, does anyone have recommendations on a portable power pack that can be used with any AC light aand any recommendations on lighting units? As with everything photographic, price is an issue, so I'm trying to fill a need at a reasonable price.

Stan:

I didn't see anyone mention the Vagabond II. Apparently they have discontinued the "Lightning Rod" multi pack version. New version is better, easier, more compact ta dah ta dah. They are fairly new.

(Sorry if I am repeating someone earlier. )

Alien Bee is also extending a buyback offer to recent purchasers of the old unit.

I ordered the V-II several weeks ago. Will report back if I can manage, that is if I get it.

I am finally going to upgrade from my Tungsten Hotlights to Strobe.
Which is the better setup to have? I am going to build a 5 light system. So, should they all be the same (eg. 600ws) or is it better to have 2 1200's, & 3 600's or all 1200's?
My shooting room is 15'x30' and I'm not sure what to buy in terms of power.

I use them with Larson softboxes. So a Cadillac softbox with a cheap light. Works for me.

Aloha Eddie!

My camera room is 19x22. I have 600ws key light, a 400ws fill, and several 200ws lights I use for hair, rim accents etc. Been using these lights for 15 years.

With this setup I can shoot at F11 when I have really big groups and need to make like 3 rows of people...So, really you only need tons of WS when shooting large architectural interiors, or huge groups outdoors. And in fact, I used to photograph high school football teams of up to 120 with just 2 400ws strobes. And at F16.

Hope this helps.
Aloha,
