Aloha PD!

As with most food photography you want to light it from the side to make any designs on it, or the texture to stand out. I'll usually put a key light almost 90 degrees to one side, then either use a reflector or a fill light to bring up the shadows so they aren't too dark. Pretty simple really.

Are you looking to do "Food photography" or covering the "detail shots" of the wedding cake at the reception hall? I think most wedding shooters will advise you to bounce the flash from a nearby white wall or white cieling to give you the texture details of the cake....(the trick is finding a nice balance between your speedlite and the available ambient light in the room). If you want to get fancy you could also do a multiple light setup.

Hi David, I didn't even think of that. It's more of the food photography kind. I'm too chicken for weddings... but maybe someday!
