Things were a bit simpler when we only had full stop increments on the cameras... it was possible to do half stop aperture if you turn the, u-hum, aperture ring between the full stop clicks, but I don't know if it was possible to set the shutter speed in between 1/125 and 1/250 on those old cameras. Then again, we could afford to be a bit sloppy with exposure when we shot negs.
First time I saw 1/2 or 1/3 stop increments was on my N80; it was really strange to me. Then I learned flash meters are calibrated to 1/10 of a stop!
Nowadays, as Will would say, "Digital demands tight exposure control" and it's a great thing to be able to adjust exposure in 1/3 stop increments...
