Marketing Part 2 - Do It and Do It Often PDF Print E-mail
Written by Joel Grimes

In part one on marketing, we looked at the two things that keep most of us from marketing effectively.  First and foremost, we must overcome our fear of rejection.  And second, we must be willing to work hard to compete in today’s marketplace.  It seems that the level of competition is greater today that ever before, and success as a photographer is no easy task.  If we are serious about choosing photography as an occupation, we have to paint a realistic picture of what we are up against.

When I graduated with a BFA in photography back in 1984, I was told there were over one hundred thousand students graduating each year with some sort of degree in photography.  I have no idea what that figure is currently, but I would assume it is much higher.  At that time, studies showed that only ten percent of those students graduating actually ended up working in the field of photography.  That doesn’t seem to be very good odds.  Of those hundred thousand students graduating each year, only one percent would reach some sort of success on a national level.
