When you go on a strenuous hike to photograph, such as the subway in Zion, what gear do you bring along?

If I am working, I usually bring about 25lbs of equipment in a pack and carry a tripod. The Subway is a long day no matter what you bring. However, I find the extra water food and gear usually gives me a piece of mind to go further or stay longer for the better shot on days like that. If I go really light, I tend to go really light. I take a Canon sd500 or now SD800 point and shoot camera, rain parka, matches, power bars and just enough water to survive.
