Hanging Out With Some Old Friends . . . PDF Print E-mail
Written by Paul Gero

Last month I was missing a couple of old "friends".

So I took my little Leica m6 ttl, with a single 35mm f1.4 aspherical lens to a wedding and proceeded to capture four rolls of Neopan 400 black and white film (rated at 250) at a Palm Springs wedding.

I didn't sell it to the client that this is what I would do, it was actually more for me and perhaps a way for me to get back to some of the tactile qualities of photography that I sometimes miss in the digital era. If you've ever placed a spool in an M series camera, or heard and felt the shutter, and manually advanced the film, you will know what I mean.

It wasn't the perfect camera for every part of the wedding -- it is hard to argue with the speed and accuracy of the Canon digital cameras, especially when using longer focal lengths at maximum aperture or even quickly focusing with fast wide angle lenses or using flash – but there were some moments, that lent themselves particularly well to the quiet and gentle way that the system works.
