Good exchange here! Good question and good replys. I think for photogs who do a lot of PR headshots a tiered pricing per useage is probably standard. I've tried to figure out appropriate pricing for every catagory of commercial use of headshots, and that is what it is...Commercial useage. Whether it's on the web or in print, it's a form of advertising the person's likeness.
What I've come to in my business is to charge a flat fee that includes the portrait creation, post (retouch etc etc), one reference print and one image on disc at 300dpi in color & B&W which they have an unlimited license to use. Additional images are additional cost.
I keep in mind that the image I sell to them is printable in any form, so they could make unlimited number of 8x10 prints as well as larger (or smaller), which essencially is lost income to me.
