Event photography printing on site 1 Month, 3 Weeks ago Karma: 0
Hello Everyone and happy spring,

Things are getting geared up here in Indy. The Indy 500 mini-marathon was ran this past weekend and coming up tomorrow is Pole Day and the first day of qualifications. With Indy car racing being put back together, this years race should be a good one. Although, Dannicka Patrick hasn't exactly gotten off to a good start. She ran over one of the pit crew last night and put him in the hospital with a concussion. But at least he's living.

I wasn't sure where to put this question because there is no event photography forum but since my question concerns shooting family reunions and birthday parties I decided on this forum.

As the subject suggest I am trying to get some information on what anyone is using to print on site. I don't plan on printing anything bigger than 8X10. For some reason everyone that has contacted me about shooting their events so far this summmer are wanting on site printing. I have never done any on site printing so I need some good advice. I'd also like to hear about your on site printing workflow.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Regards,
George

Hey George,
Well for the sake of speed you are probably going to want to get yourself into a DyeSub printer. If you are interested i've got barely used Olympus Dye Sub with a ton of supplies i'm willing to let go for a good price.

Email me offline at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it if you want more info.

In my experience the inkjets just aren't fast enough for on location printing. Things may have changed in the past couple years but at the time i was doing event work dye subs were king.

Hi Cris,

Thanks for responding. I sent you an email. Can you give me any other advice? Did you stop printing on site and if so why?

Lets see now. You need to lug printer(s),laptop and cords, paper and ink or toner, more flash cards so you can swap out to hand to the assistant that doing the actual printing. Oh there are the folders for the prints to be inserted into. Pray that nothing goes wrong with the printer while on the site. Hopefully you will have access to AC power to run the printer and laptop.
Some people find that to be more trouble than it is worth.

Hi all, here in Mexico while I'm covering the wedding album, another photographer who is not with me has already done a deal with the owner of the place comes in and take pictures of the couples in their tables and then leaves, takes the card to a lab and comesback before he party ends with a bunch of 5x7 with a nice digital border and sells them for about $3.00 dlls each.
This happens all the time so I don't tink I could compete with them for that price if I would use a printer onsite.

Hi George,
While he others are correct it's alot more work than what you initially perceive it to be, I ended up getting out of it just because i didn't have the time anymore. Little things like this site have somehow consumed my life

I hope you got me email regarding the printer, just let me know if you didn't.
