This isn't a question, but just wanted to say, I received your Softbox lighting book for Christmas, and just started getting into it. Can't wait until I get into the meat and potatoes!

man, I'm half way through or more, and I do have questions.
on your metering, main at 8.7, and fill at 5.6 and 7/10s, why don't you make them even numbers, instead of worrying about the 10ths? I read you set your camera to an even f/11, but I was wondering about that.

YOur models are beautiful of course! I'm sure there will be some others along the way, but the book is great so far! Nice work. Oh, I appreciated your candidness in your introduction too, thanks for sharing your limitations .

Hi Jess,

Thanks for the comments. The "7/10's" stuff comes from my transparency days when I wanted a little more pop to my models' faces. I still use that configuration often--especially when she wears white. The main at say 8 and 7/10 will slightly underexpose the whites while the fill at 5.6 7/10 will add the pop to her face, but will not affect the outfit [with a tight grid as a fill] when the camera is set at f 11. Whites are hard to control with digital capture and this makes it a little easier without making them muddy. I find myself using more of the "exact' readings now and tweaking the exposures slightly when I process the RAW images.

Dang! You actually read the introduction??? Thanks [LOL :D ] There really isn't any use in hiding the fact that I get around with the aid of two canes. I've had cerebral palsy all my life so my mobility--or lack thereof--is just part of the package. Besides, my buddies who carry all of my gear around deserve the props that they earn!

[Hey Domi--if you read this--Mahalos!]

yup, I started with the first page and am almost done with it.
Question about grids, which I actually need to order for end of yr purchases. I use photogenic lights, and they have a coarse and fine grid. What numbers would correspond to those. I know they come in different numbers like a 40, 30, 20, and whatever......

thanks again. I really like some of the lighting setups you demonstrate. A worthwhile book!

Hey Jess,

I have sets of 40, 30, 20, and 10 degree grids. I also have a 3 degree grid. I'm not sure what coarse and fine correspond to...
