[QUOTE=StephenDantzig]Hi Michael,

"I don't use ETTL...can you explain what yuo did? Did you set you flash to a certain output, or does the camera control that when you set the exposures? "

All I did was turn on the flash - the ETTL system automatically exposes for the foreground - based on reflected light and focus distance. You can adjust background exposure and flash exposure by changing either shutter speed or flash output.

To adjust flash output, I press the flash compensation button on top of the camera, close to the shutter release button and turn the wheel on the back with my thumb. On the 5D, the flash compensation amount is then displayed in the viewfinder.

Sure, you can switch to manual if you want, but I found that ETTL with the 5D is usually very close or spot-on.

You can also put a second (or more) flash on a separate stand and still use ETTL wirelessly - as long as the stand-alone flashes can see the command flash from the on-camera unit.

With an umbrella on the second flash unit, I can replicate the scenarios from you lessons without the heavy and expensive studio equipment - only constrained by the flash power, that limits me to about 5 feet umbrella to subject distance on a 'sunny 16 day'

My final option, for lightweight operation is triggering the flash with a Pocket Wizard - this time in manual mode only. Using a compact light stand or tripod for the flash, It can all fit into/onto a large camera bag.

If I get the chance this summer, I will create a small article, comparing the results.

Regards
Michael

StephenDantzig:
Hi Michael,

The pose and interaction between the subject[s] is nicer in the park too.

Well, the shots was made during my Mothers birthday party. The park is my parents garden, and I asked my wife to do a quick pose after lunch.

At the scene at the beach, both of the girls really wanted to go home, so I barely got the shot and practice - you know, never underestimate the power of a hungry Filippina

Another fill flash shot b.t.w., again with on camera flash direct:

She was climbing a small slide on the playground and sliding down. Every time she reached the top of the stairs, there was a brief photo oppertunity. This time she sent me a kiss.

You know I previously commented on one of your models with posing with a fur hood - I found this picture of my daughter that just shows that girls and fur compliment each other.

Regards
Michael
