I have a shoot on Saturday at high noon, much like George. The leaves are just starting to come out here in Wisconsin so there won't be a lot of shade to work with. It'll be interesting to see what I come up with. This is going to be fun.

Where ya been??? Not much shade...high noon...hmmm...think SCRIMS!!! Portable shade! Don't have a scrim? If you have a Home Depot [or something like it] and a fabric store nearby then you have a scrim! Buy two 10' 3/4" PVC tubes from Home Depot--don't forget the corners. Cut both of them at the 5 or 6' mark. By a piece of thin translucent white fabric to fit the frame and some elastic pieces. Sow elastic corners on the fabric to hold the fabric on the frame and you have a nice scrim--probably for less than $25.00. Don't forget to bring the strobes to your shoot!

Well Steve, I have been exactly where you told me to be. I have been reading some business books, went to a couple of business seminars, redid my pricing structure, i.e. raised my prices, am working on a marketing strategy, and made a list of goals that I have set for myself for the year. This is the first time that I have actually written down goals, so it will be interesting to see what happens.

Ok, now to the task at hand...scrims. Your homemade scrim sounds great and I will definitely do that, (or find a shadier place) but...I don't work with an assistant, do you have any suggestions for holding it in place. The shoot will be a family shoot, so they'll all be in the picture.

I'm a little nervous about this one. I shot the children in my studio about a month ago and the mom absolutely raved about the images. Now I must perform up to her expectations away from the safety of the studio. Her folks are in from England, so this is a one time thing. If I screw it up, I'm toast.

Yeah...without an assistant the scrim can pose a problem...You may be able to hold it with 2 or 3 light stands....if there's not much breeze and the stands won't be in the shot!

This isn't my place here to advise since this is Steve's contest, but I just wanted to say that it's good that you're nervous! (To a point) It's a responsability to create portraits for people, and you want to live up to yours as well as their expectations. All the best entertainers get a little butterflies just B4 going on stage! Just means you aren't complacent...and good that you aren't!

You know what you're doing, you know your equipment, so go have FUN and make some beautiful images!!
