Resources / training / seminars? 1 Month, 3 Weeks ago Karma: 0
Hello all,
I have always enjoyed shooting architecture, although my coursework and training did not really provide me with the knowledge needed in the field.

I'm trying to back track now and learn as much as possible, make smarter purchases - and really "do it right."

Does anyone have any suggestions on books, seminars/courses, webinars, etc... that focus on things like filter choices, lens choices, lighting techniques, planning & strategy and so on.

I'm really trying to make sure I've got my essentials covered!

I feel like I have a good eye, but I'm trying to meet the aesthetic sense with the technical sense and many of the resources I have found are a bit below my level. I'm stuck in the middle!

Any insight you have would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance,
Eric

Good question--no good answers I'm afraid. The lack of books, seminars, courses, etc. is due to the small size of the architectural photography community relative to other types of photography.

Most of the books out there are good resources for theory (i.e., composition, lighting, etc.), however they were nearly all written when film was the medium of choice.

I have a book coming out early next year tentatively titled "The Architectural Photographer's Handbook." In the meantime, may I suggest that you check out Norm McGrath's book (the title escapes me) and other titles that may be available in university libraries.

There are several workshops operating but I can't vouch for their quality. I wish there was more to offer. The best way to learn this craft is to assist an established architectural photographer whose work you admire.

Best,
Alan

Thanks Alan for the advice, and unfortunately your description is what I have experienced as well.

Please keep me posted on your book, sounds like something I will be interested in!

Thanks!
