It seems that almost every image I do these days involves different exposures layered in photoshop. I then use layer masks and the brush tool to blend the layers, but this can be very labour intensive.

Are there any more "automated" techniques for blending different exposures (Bright windows/dark interiors, sconces too bright, etc.) that produce convincing results? I've tried some of those high dynamic range things in the past, but found the results very unnatural.

Cheers,

Andrew

I'm not aware of any "automated" plugins or software for this process. Photoshop's HDR process is hit & miss at best. I'd be happy to hear from anyone who has a solution to this!

Best,
Alan

I'm new here, but I will share a "trade secret" that I find very useful for blending exposures:

Photomatrix

It does what Photoshop does, but is easier to use and I think it produces better results. The trick is not to over do the effect. I usually use the HDR image blended with the original, properly exposed image, at 30%-70% opacity.

I hope this helps.

Alan
