In all fairness to the NYIP grads [one of which offers his services here] this quote is not representative of the talent nor business sense of all NYIP graduates.

The best thing to do when when most real estate agents call is to let them know where to cheapest place in town is for them to go buy their own point and shoot. In the dictionary under 'Cheap Charlie' is a real estate agents photo. I swear its true. Go take a look.

One of my best friends is a real estate agent in Las Vegas, NV. He recently told me that he is now doing photography because homes aren't moving so fast. So he shoots indoor shots for a company that creates virtual tours for home sellers. He gets paid $40.00 per house and he says he can do 3 a day. The funny thing is, he is happy about that! I'm really worried about him!

Just my opinion, but unless you get a call from Sotheby's Int. Realty or a similar firm, the real estate market is a waste of time for a serious shooter. Set your sights higher and develop your own niche for high quality architectural photography. I get these calls too, but always refer them on to a photographer who is inexperienced and really hungry. Like everything else, you get what you pay for.

Hey Alan...

I'm new here, and I was very intigued by your comment about real estate vs. architectural photography. Would you be so kind as to explain the major differences? I have always loved taking images of architecture, but see no means to make money with it unless it's in real estate.

I am of course very ignorant of this particular facet of the industry and would appreciate any clarification that you could offer.

Thanks in advance...

Russ

Hey...was someone maligning my alma matter, NYIP??! I didn't see it, but I saw a remark about a comment not being representative of NYIP grads....

Anyway, re RE vs Archetectural...I think the distinction being made is hotos of houses & buildings etc shot for a RE company to put in the newspaper or on a website, etc vs Beautifully lit, composed and framed archetectural photographs of interiors and exteriors of homes and buildings for the purpose of advertising for the archetect, or design firm in high end print etc.

The former is generally lower quality and pays very poorly. The later is of very high quality and pays considerably better!
