Strobes, hot lights or both? What's your preference? 1 Year, 9 Months ago Karma: 0
I was wondering if people here have a preference for hot lights or strobes, or whether you think it's important to have a full kit of each? I'm currently using both, but prefer to use hot lights when I can. That's what I started shooting with, I have more of them, and I like the WYSIWYG factor.

However, I was talking to a a local photographer who also shoots interiors and he says he only uses strobes, because they can do everything hot lights can, plus a lot more. He says he can gel them if he needs a tungsten balance, or he can just use the modeling lights, so he saw no need to carry a case of hot lights around like I do.

He really got me thinking and I was just wondering what people here had to say about this.

Cheers,

Andrew

I use both Andrew. However for daylight interiors I almost always use strobes. It's a matter of having the power to match (or come close to matching) the ambient exposure. On the other hand, I almost always use hot lights for dusk or evening interiors. This is because the value of my ambient exposure has decreased dramatically.

I should also mention that on extended road trips I only take my strobe kit. If I need to shoot a tungsten interior that I would normally have used hot lights, I simply use the modeling lights on the strobes or gel the strobes to a tungsten balance.
