Architectural Shots That Sell PDF Print E-mail
Written by Alan Blakely

Over the years I’ve seen some definite trends in the types of shots that clients love. This month I’d like to share six ideas for shots that are proven winners in any assignment.

1. Dusk Views
There’s something truly magical about the look of either an interior or exterior view taken at dusk with a balance of cobalt blue ambient light and warm, glowing artificial light.  Dusk views are the bread and butter of the professional architectural photographer and always a welcome addition to any assignment.

Exterior views at dusk require a careful balance between sky values and artificial light values.  The window of opportunity for a properly balanced shot is mere minutes.  If the sky is too dark and the building or home looks like a cave—too light and the effect is lost altogether.

Balance is also critical when shooting interior views at dusk. Again, the value of the cool, natural outdoor light must balance with the warm interior lighting.  For both exterior and interior views I recommend substantial bracketing.  With regard to color balance, I recommend balancing for the artificial light source with a trend towards a warm balance.  This will render a beautiful deep blue sky.
