Okay - I have gotten your messages loud and clear so I will get down to the nuts and bolts on how and why some of my images were created. Hopefully in doing so this may give you an insight on how the lighting is handled as well as how the whole process unfolds.
In my case a lot of what an image will become happens on the front end. Well before I make any decisions on my lighting I make sure that I get a solid understanding of what it is my client is trying to say. When clients are paying for custom photography I want to give them just that - a customized experience. So by listening, and in some cases dragging their vision out of them, I can then begin to think about what lighting can best produce what it is they want. Often times art directors and I will email comps back and forth so that we both know we are on the same page. When equipment rentals come into play I need to make sure I have what I need to get the job done but do not "over rent", which wastes my client's money, and that is one problem that can be avoided with some planning. When everything starts to feel clear we move on to the creation phase of the project.
