Over the next couple of months I am taking the ultimate leap of faith and heading out to California to essentially start my career over as a commercial photographer. Portrait photographers have often asked me how they might make the switch over to commercial work and I want to use this month's article to provide some insight into what I am going through while actually making this transition. I hope that some of the questions and uncertainties I am facing now will help you along the way as you make your own decisions.

When I decided to become a photographer my goal was never to start a portrait studio. For many of us portrait studios start as a product of necessity but then become an object of our passions. We developed our studios, learned their intricacies and created businesses that sustained us, but all the while we were waiting for an opportunity to go after the commercial and editorial work that we had always wanted to do.
